Written by Jeff Nilges
Tuesday, 08 January 2008

Originally we overheard that the PowerLite Home Cinema 1080 UB projector would be headed to the U.S. in December. Unexpectedly they chose CES to launch it. It has a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution and 50,000:1 contrast ratio, it also features a 3LCD optical engine, 12-bit video processing, 1,600 ANSI lumens, and a pair of HDMI 1.3 inputs. Best of all its only $2,799 after a $200 rebate. Not bad eh?

This new LCD definitely has our attention. The 32-inch Helios A32 has a 1,366 x 768 resolution panel, an optional "integrated wireless media center," a sign DVB-T tuner plus twin analog tuners, PIP support, a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, eight millisecond response time, it's own ambient lighting system and an internal amplifier for speakers. Now tell me that’s not kickass. You can pick it up for about $3,085. Not bad.

The New Marantz VP-15S1 Projector is definitely not cheap, but it brings on the high-end 1080p for your home theater. From last years model, the specs have significantly enhanced. The contrast ratio is punched up, from 6500:1 in the old model to 10,000:1, and it's significantly brighter, up from 700 lumens to 1000 lumens. Also updated on this current model is the color processing, from 10-bit before to 12-bit now. However, the most notable aspect of this new release is the huge price cut. It's to be released in Japan in November, but Marantz is saying when or if it will appear in the States, but since there is a US press release published, we think it will appear here soon after the Japan release.

Pinnacle, purveyors of video editing software, keeps expanding their line of PC/TV accessories.
The most recent addition to the family is the PCTV HD Ultimate stick.

Available next month the $80 desktop gadget ($130 for your laptop) will let you connect an antenna to your PC to pick up your favorite ATSC digital TV signals as well as good old NTSC too.

The magical thing with the PCTV HD is that Pinacle claims you don't have to install any software to use it!

Also, a couple of other nice little features are that the stick contains some built in flash storage so that you can record 2 hours of your favorite daytime dramas to it to watch later and it has a nifty little remote.

Looking at the box, the bundle includes a mini-travel bag (promoting the 'record and go' functionality) and the necessary AV Adapter cable.
