iRobot is looking to make the male species obsolete with the introduction of its iRobot ConnectR Virtual Visiting Robot.
There is a lot to say about the new iRobot product, Visit their site for a lot more information.
Here is the brief. It doesn't clean our house. Unlike it's predecessors the ConectR is purely for being at home remotely.
The sales pitch for the $500 (or $200 if you get on a special list) is that you can control the ConectR remotely and play with your kids, pets and generally 'visit' from your office or hotel room when you can't be at home.
The Wi-Fi conected 'bot has a 16+ X Zoomable web cam, privacy controls, a speaker and the usual built in 'bumper' so that it doesn't break your childs ankle.
The privacy is a good feature. Letting you, as the 'host' at home turn off the ConnectR when you don't want to be disturbed. Also you can se up 10 users for 1 at a time access to the device so that you, your wife, the mother in-law and grandparents can all randomly check in on the babysitter.
