The Satellite Speakers
A look at the satellite speaker reveals the same 3 inch dual phase plug speaker used in the Z-680 but Logitech did a few tweaks to improve the sound. Phase plug satellite speakers combines two drivers into one: the clarity of a tweeter with the richness and fullness of a separate mid-range. The satellite speaker acts like a single point source transducer, allowing for better staging and imaging.

Logitech redesigned the enclosure used by driver for a more modern look. The new enclosure is narrower and taller than the Z-680 enclosure. Z-5500_SATELLITEThe biggest change is the relocation of the ports. Where as the Z-680 had its port at the front, the Z-5500 moved the port to the back of the enclosure. This helps to reduce port whistling that often occurs with small diameter ports like those used by the Z-5500 drivers.

The satellite speakers comes with stands that can rotated in case you want to mount the speaker on the side of a wall. The mounting bracket doesn't allow for any angle adjustment of the speaker itself but the satellite housing does angle the speaker up towards the listener for better sound reproduction. The satellites include a cloth grill that can be removed for a sleek, chrome look or left on for protection. Logitech claims the grill have no effects on sound quality.

An interesting change in the new satellites is the speaker cables are now attached right to the speakers, which is unfortunate since the Z-680 let you use any length and type of speaker wire you wanted. Yes, there are people who will wire up their computer speakers with better quality wires than what is supplied. However, the 25-foot Logitech wires should be enough for most rooms. If not, then you out of luck unless you know how to splice RCA speaker wires.

The center channel speaker uses same driver and ported enclosure as the rest of the satellite speakers. However, the center channel enclosure allows for a high degree of up and down angle adjustment while the satellites have none. This allows you to aim the center channel speaker with much higher precision and get the best possible sound.
